The Farm
Groundbreaking in 2013
Five Foot Farm is a small scale farm growing a variety of veggies for Plumas County eaters. The farm was founded in 2014 by Elizabeth Powell and Cody Reed. We expanded and consolidated from 3 smaller growing sites onto one 4 acre plot of land in Quincy. This process of scaling up was exciting, daunting and hugely educational. We are thrilled to put down roots on this amazing piece of property!
Five Foot Farm is located in Quincy, California at an elevation of 3,500 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The farm site sits close to downtown, between the big Dyrr barn and Spanish Creek. The land has an epic view of Spanish Peak and wide open southern exposure. Our soil is deep and we've only found one rock so far!
We spent 2013 working on site assessment and development, adding soil amendments (all organic) and manure, and starting the construction of our hoop house. In 2014 we kicked some butt developing the farm site (deer fencing, irrigation systems, hoop houses, and more!) and successfully grew about a half an acre of mixed vegetables. In 2015 we established more pollinator plantings, berries, flowers and fruit trees, and grew about an acre and a half of gorgeous produce. 2016 and 2017 marked our biggest production years, with most of the 2.5 acres in veggie production. During these years Cody moved on from the farm to pursue graduate studies, and Elizabeth had a beautiful baby girl, so we reconsidered the farm's focus in 2018, moving more toward u-pick crops, including berries and pumpkins.

Our Growing Practices
We're committed to being good stewards of the farm's ecological health. We support the health and biodiversity of the land by applying compost, cover cropping, rotating diverse crops, and applying (not drinking!) compost teas. We conserve water through the use of drip irrigation and mulches. We carefully select mostly organic seeds, sometimes heirloom varieties and never GMO. We don't feel the need to get certified organic; instead we strive to have open relationships with our customers. Ask us anything you want, we're happy to tell you all about our farm practices!
